Paleo Backpacking

Summer is upon us and for many who live in the Pacific Northwest, that means backpacking season is here! I have always struggled to find amazing food options for the trail that fit into the paleo lifestyle. Unless you want to be eating dehydrated meat all the time, it’s been one of the hardest tasks! Not to mention the cost. So this summer I am taking it upon myself to stick to paleo eating even when hiking and backpacking.

From experience, dehydrating your own meat is really not that hard and the same goes with fruits and vegetables…easy easy easy. I wanted to give some practical ideas that you can run with when thinking about preparing food for backpacking – following is a list of things I will be trying!

Portland woods

– Beef stew {dehydrated beef, dehyd. broccoli, dehyd. carrots, dehyd. peas, dehyd. yam, beef bullion}

– Nut granola bars

– Muesli (nuts, seeds, ground flax seed, dates, dried apple/fruit}

– Dehyd. Chicken and cheese sauce {{*For those who eat dairy}}

–   Salami slices, jerky, cheese and coconutter squares

These are just ideas I’m tossing around. I know there will be a lot more planning when the time comes to actually put it together, but the day hikes I know I want to go on will be good trial runs.

What kind of meals do you take on the trail with you? Any recipes you’d like to share?
